Protected No Claims Discount Query

Here's my dilemma:
Been with current insurance company (Zenith via Endsleigh) for 2 years.
No claims made, therefore 2 years NCD with them
When I went to them, I had made several claims over the previous 3 years (the last one being 6/06), BUT I had Protected NCD with previous insurer, 8 years in total, so Zenith/Endsleigh gave me the benefit of that (in theory).
Their renewal quote is not competitive (surprise surprise!!), so I'm looking elsewhere.
The question is, how many years NCD have I got???
2 years or what?

If I understand the system, and I'm sure someone with an insurance background will correct me if I'm wrong, it depends entirely on your current insurers policy on NCD - so as raskazz says you'll have to ask them.
I was with a particular insurer for a long time and they counted ever year so when I left I had 12yrs NCD, moved to LV who give credit only up to 9yrs so when I left them I got "at least 9yrs NCD" as that was the limit of the credits they'd give. Now I'm with Saga and, as I understand it, if I leave them I'll have "at least 4yrs NCD" as they don't count any higher than that.
To complicate matters further if your bonus is protected and the claims you made don't reduce it because of the protection then your NCD is still up to the max allowed by your current insurers as it's the bonus entitlement, rather than the number of years claim free. Though, of course, you have to mention the claims when you apply to a new insurer.
I'm sure it makes sense to insurance companies but it doesn't to me!0
