I would warn anyone against using Birmingham Midshires, as my experience has been quite negative.
Have had an account with them for a number of years, when they had high street representation, and since Halifax stopped representing them on the high street, they have become extremely unhelpful. Also, they don't like you having access to your own money. However, to new customers they MAY be more welcoming.
If you can, try looking at a local Building Society, as when I was in my local one (West Brom), their savings rates are quite good (as they don't provide current accounts generally) and they aren't listed on comparison websites.0
