Overpaid Grant

Hiya,
I just got a letter from the Student Loans company saying they overpaid me on my grant and after reassessing I owe them back £153 which I should pay now.

This has came out of the blue, I didn't realise any overpayment had happened!
I've finished Uni but I'm looking for a full time job and there is no way I can afford to pay the £153 they're asking.

Will they understand if I ring and explain this to them, and pay it back when I have a full time job?

I imagine they will accept installments if you contact them asap and explain your situation. As long as you are paying something, it is difficult for them to take you to court and not cost effective either for a sum that size, I'd have thought.

Is this definitely the first time you've heard of it? Your position is not so good if they have been chasing this a while.

Give them a call tomorrow morning and see what they say.

This is the first time I have heard from them about this. I can't even pay installments at the moment, I'm waiting to get a job!

You need to ring them asap then, if you haven't done so already...?

suggest to them that you pay them back in 153 easy monthly installments
    helpful tips
    it's spelt d-e-f-i-n-i-t-e-l-y
there - 'in or at that place'
    their - 'owned by them'
    they're - 'they are'
it's bought not brought (i just bought my chicken a suit from that new shop for £6.34)

I rang and he didn't seem sympathetic, I have to pay £10 a month which I can't afford but nevermind.
I'm actually at my overdraft limit right now so not sure if it's even going to come out of my account?
  • they did this to me as well but with about £300 which they wrongly paid me after i left my course.

i was out the country at the time and they kept hounding my house with letters but wouldnt discuss it with my parents - ridiculous!!

in the end i managed 2 dither about paying them back what i could afford every month. they let me wait until i got my 1st wage packet though.

i now also owe then around £700 in overpaid loan - again because of leaving my course which im refusing to pay given im paying my loan back through my monthly wages anyways!! they are the worst company EVER!!!

I think it's a bit harsh to say they're "the worst company ever", I used to work for the SLC and, in actual fact, they have very little to do with entitlement, it's the Local Authority that decides and passes this to the SLC.

More often than not an overpaid grant is due to childcare costs being less than the LA predicted.

fair enough but what i mean is the fact i wrote to the SLC several times telling me they had paid the grant in error, asking for info on how to pay it back and they didnt reply at all!

please don't go over your OD limit for a the sake of £10... you will probably end up with 20-30 worth of fees plus an adverse mark on your credit record which can cause you endless hassle for years to come and they may reduce your OD limit as your a/c isn't being properly managed...

I see what you're saying. The only thing I could suggest is to phone them and query why they haven't replied.

I think they have a separate 0141 number rather than the 0845 customer service line.
