the day you can get a magnet to pick up the limestone rocks in your patio is the time to buy one!!

If you have limescale - the only way is a water softener - but they are expensive to buy - and you will note that none of the manufacturers refer to 'efficiency' thats because they are awfully inefficient - and your water bill will shoot up.
  • These devices might work if you have a direct water system where you use the water as soon as it passes the device. If you have a vented system with a large tank in the loft then you will need a magnet on the rising main and another one on the feed down from the tank - even the manufactures admit that the effect on the water doesn't last for stored water. Not sure if it would protect your hot water cylinder.

  • I had a Pozzani Black Box on my rising main only. it kept the kettle clean (though it did get full of sludge), but everything in the bathroom is covered in scale. I've thrown it away and bought a water softener now. (Actually I sold it on ebay, but I only got a fiver).
  • The science behind these devices seam logical to me. Having looked into this before, the general concenses is that yes they work, no they dont! Its hit and miss. Two neighbouring houses, both with the same scale inhibitor installed can have different results. But having just read the previous post about storage tanks, maybe thats the reason.
A plumbed in inhibitor can be had for £30 from screwfix so maybe its worth a gamble.
