New fire surround

Options
Just bought a new Fire Surround and Granite insert and hearth also bought a new gas fire.
I contacted a local gas fitter who said he would charge £300 to take out the old fire surround, hearth and gas fire and fit the new.
Having looked at the new surround it appears to be held to the wall with 2 screws!!
The fitter said it would take him a day.
£300 for a day's work!! and he's not supplying a thing..

any comments?
Before you criticise someone, you should walk a mile in their shoes.
That way, when you criticise them, you're a mile away and you have their shoes.

our old fire surround was just held on by a couple of screws as well took me all of 5 mins max to remove,
obviously i wouldn't attempt to remove a fire etc, but i think the quote is very excessive, unless of course there's alot of work involved in the cutting to shape of the granite etc ??? when we first moved here we had a gas fitter come and fit a new one for us, cost me £50 and he checked the flues and connections to all other gas appliances as well cos it was an old house.

I'd ring around some more fitters if i was you, better still try and find a registered fitter amongst friends/family if you can. ;) ;D HTH & good luck
ps. please don't try to do it yourself it can be dangerous :-[

    ya still freezing :p

  • Does seem a bit on the high side..if it's a simple job and just replacing like for like..depends what's involved though, does he have to alter brick work etc and cut the granite??

I got a quote earlier in the year to rip out old and fit new gas fire and surround...think it was about £160 but I didn't bother in the end because we couldn't find a gas fire we both liked. Paid him £30 to rip out the old fire and surround and disconnect the gas pipes, we then fitted a new surround and an electric fire ourselves.

1)most fire sorrounds come flat packed and have to be assembled >:(,
2)how do u kno whats gonna be behind the exsisting fire eg .... the chimney cud be blocked or the chimney lintel may hace cracked.u may even have a firebrick or damper there :o
    3)its a two man job.unless u got 2 pairs of hands.

i had a new gas fire and surround a few weeks ago, ripped out the old gas fire and surround myself, bought a fitting kit from B&Q which included a tap for the gas inlet (so i could seal it). i fitted the new surround myself, as you said 2 screws (B&Q job).

I then paid a plumber to fit the new gas fire and sort the connection out and he charged be £60 including testing etc, he also inspected/tested the chimney too.
