Friend got a new computer which has Vista software. He tries to load a software but gets a message saying he can only install software if he is an administrator. There is only one account and looking at the user account he is the administrator.

Any idea how he can overcome this problem?

Thanks in advance to those who replied.
Problem with having access to internet is that i get asked by many to solve their problems :( Well at least i learn something on the way :D

Right click on installation program (setup.exe/install.exe etc) and select "Run as administator".

I installed Vista a few months ago and only a few program I use needed this intervention, most just installed normally.

Thanks for the info. I tried that but do not have that option.

As a matter of interest i find that with spybot search and destroy i have to run it as administrator in order to update it on vista

  • Try right clicking on installation program (setup.exe/install.exe etc) and select "Properties", click the "Compatibilities" tab and tick "Run this program as an administrator" click OK and try running the program.

If that doesn't work go to the same tab and tick "Run this program in compatibility mode for" and select which ever operating system you were using before.

If that doesn't work click Start button (circular Windows icon at bottom left) click "All Programs"/"Accessories" and then right click on "Command Prompt" and select "Run as administrator". This will open a DOS Command Prompt, navigate to installation program and run it.

Update - tried the above and could not load the software. What i did then is to plug in the bluetooth dongle (whose software i am trying to download from CD) and restarted the PC. It found the new device and i pointed it to the CD to load the software. It worked.
