my D drive has dissapeared?

Hi all, a little while ago i installed a new dvd writer on my pc which was drive E ....... for some strange reason all of a sudden it has now dissapeared along with drive D (old cd/r drive) the pc now no longer has either drive on the system?

I have tried putting cd's into both drives in the hope that it would kickstart the found new hardware wizard ....... but nothing.

Any ideas? ... im running xp

Ok Jumpers are a small switches on the back of some hardware
to let the PC know if it is set to slave or master.....

The settings should be on your CD documentation or on the top
    of the hardware its self........http://www.annoyances.org/exec/forum/win98/t1129302804

Go into the bios and go to the ide detection bit, probably on autodetect, just press enter on the master and slave ide channels and it should tell you what's on it, i.e. IDE 0 master should be your hard disk, IDE 1 master should be your DVDRW etc

Or you could just have a look when the PC boots, should tell you after the memory check. In that table thingy bobby, with the top half missing, just before all the blurp about the usb ports, not explaining this very well...

If it appears in bios or on startup then it's a windows problem.

If it's none of the above then could be that the IDE cable has become loose/broke etc. That's the big grey one that you plugged into the back of the dvd writer when you installed it :)

Let us know how you get on :)
  • Thanks for all your help ... problem now solved.

After checking out various websites ... i resorted to checking with microsoft (lol).

The problem was that i had a copy of roxio's Easy cd creator 5 which when i deleted it had interferd with the device driver settings rendering it useless ... i had to delete a couple of registry files as advised by Microsoft and all is now well.

    Thanks again
