I'm glad that no-one thinks it is a valid reason not to complete the purchase but i did offer to reduce the price instead of doing the carpets myself but they didn't want to .
Now, just don't get tempted to do anything about what you have found under the carpets. As long as you don't, then your buyers are deemed to have bought knowing the condition.

As long as you just take the carpets up and do nothing else, you are fine. But having exchanged, if you then do anything to change the state of the place then it could be argued that you have damaged it. So let it be, however bad it looks

    What did you sell at?

Is £500 really worth worrying about?

Leave the goddam carpets, lose the £500 and let them worry about anything underneath

    move on

Without knowing what they intend, I'd guess that they will be fitting their own new flooring and didn't want the hassle of removing old carpets. So I'd not be worried about the state of the tiles underneath.

There's always a risk they're the sort to get sniffy at damaged flooring - if they're the sort who don't want to move carpet.
It is normal to leave the carpets.
