I'm not that that familiar with ADSL, so could someone please provide a list of things to check, obviously in order of importance.
Unfortunately I can't find the the piece of paper with all the details but,
1.desktop wired and wireless laptop, Netgear router DG834g (IIRC)
2.aol 2Mb service.(They think)
3.2.7km from exchange, Fixed 2Mb / DSL Max 4.5Mb (In the sticks)
A quick speed test showed Latency 57ms
Down 384kb/s
Up 360kb/s
It is a new build, with the router in the office plugged into a proper extension socket, I didn't have a chance to try the master socket.
When updating Spybot to 1.6.0 it downloaded at 16Kb/s.
I cannot do anything for a few days, but could use a list of things to check.
Thanks R

You make no mention of having installed ADSL micro-filters, one of which must be plugged into each telephone socket which is being used (for router or phone or whatever). (Sometimes the master socket has a built-in microfilter.)0

Yes, as said above needs to be checked out.
Personally, I don't like AOL. American ISP's should never come to the UK!0 -
To clarify, it's not mine and micro-filters are fitted in all the correct places.Personally, I don't like AOL. American ISP's should never come to the UK!
There was me thinking they were Carphone warehouse.Move along, nothing to see.0 -
Hi Spud17,
We are with AOL and we had an e-mail to advise that our line had been upgraded and we were in a 10 day "stabilisation" period and that it should go away 48 hours after that.
During this 10 day period, the service was awful & slow.
We've now been past that time and the connection does appear to be faster (haven't tested yet) but it is certainly more reliable and it has not fallen over once.
Has your line been upgraded??
Hope this helps.0 -
Thanks si man.
I'm helping some friends, I sorted the PC a few weeks back, I thought BB was slow at that time.
Yesterday I was there and ran a speed test and got the figures in post #1 (from memory).
I think the figures are not correct i.e. the down figure does not tally with the up figure.
They never lose connection, it's just slow.
Regarding the upgrade, they were transferred over to CPW a while back.Move along, nothing to see.0
