Peanut Butter

Options
Hi,

Is it safe for dogs to have peanut butter? As I have been told they love it stuffed in KONGS and frozen!

Comments

  • as far as I know, yes. However, it is high in fat, so maybe shouldnt be given too much or in dogs where a low fat diet is advised (eg. overweight dogs or animals with conditions such as pancreatitis that need to avoid fatty foods)

It may also (as with any new food) give your dog a bit of a runny tummy at first, so I would keep to relatively small amounts.

As a treat, yes. It's also useful when trying to trick your pup into taking medication!

I wouldn't stuff the whole Kong with peanut butter, but it's good to plug the ends with before freezing.

Low fat yoghurt works well frozen in kongs as well. The main thing with either is to use a relatively small amount smeared around the inside, or a small plug at either end to hold kibble or similar in. You don't stuff the whole kong with it.
When I had my loft converted back into a loft, the neighbours came around and scoffed, and called me retro.

    Lol

Nothing. Just stick it in the micro for a few secs to melt the cheese. Let it get cold again before giving to the dog and there should be a nice solid mess he will take an age getting out.

Dobie loves peanut butter (smooth) and marmite, and, when she was a pup I used to put a dollop of honey on the door so she'd be busy while I dried her off after walking in the rain :D

Off to buy a new kong tomorrow and try out some of the great ideas for fillings. Only thing is dobe tends to 'bounce' her kong so there'll be lots of crashing and banging. Still, keeps her happy :D
