My moneysaving tendancies would say free ones, however I want my laptop protected.

I have so had my eyes opened by posting on this forum today - I have realised that I know nothing about computers/viruses etc and I would have been in pieces if I had of been unable to clean up my laptop today.

However, I hope people realise that once I decide what software I want, that they will have to talk me through it. :eek:

What AV software do other people use?

Personally I use Avira Antivir but avast is just as good. Both are free only difference is you dont need the activation key with antivir. Occasionally you should run an online scan because no antivirus is perfect.

Free AV software is AVG 7.something....http://download.com
Windows defender is free
PCtools to a free firewall, so do Zone alarm (all avilable on download.com)
Anti Spyware and Malware tool is Xblock, http://www.xblock.com
comes on a 30 day free trial, inoculates your pc from malware (providing you keep your definitions up to date and you pay the subscription)/

if you get a virus you cant get rid of, type the name of it in http://www.symantec.com (go to the virus listing) they provide a load of free virus removal tools

also.. McAfee provide a free removal tool called stinger which normally does a pretty good job

Run an online scan with Kaspersky - this will not remove anything so it is safe to run;

Please do a scan with Kaspersky Online Scanner

Note: If you are using Windows Vista, open your browser by right-clicking on its icon and select 'Run as administrator' to perform this scan.

Click on the Accept button and install any components it needs.

• The program will install and then begin downloading the latest definition files.
• After the files have been downloaded on the left side of the page in the Scan section select My Computer
• This will start the program and scan your system.
• The scan will take a while, so be patient and let it run.
• Once the scan is complete, click on View scan report
• Now, click on the Save Report as button.
• Save the file to your desktop.
• Copy and paste that information in your next post.
