Which ISP will support a VPN connection?

Hi all

I'm with AOL and have recently been set up to access my work's VPN. However, every few minutes the connection disconnects and I have to start all over again.

AOL tell me they don't support VPN so I was wondering if anyone can suggest an ISP that is up to the job.

Or is it about the quality of my connection rather than the ISP? At the moment my modem is connected via a usb port. Would it be better to get a lead that went into the ethernet port or wouldn't this make any difference?

As you can probably work out I'm not sure what the problem is (I've heard AOL aren't the best in this area) and would be grateful for any advice.

Thanks

The ability to connect to VPN would often come down to what hardware you connect through, some routers will support it by allowing port access and some won't. Since VPN is not seen as a key point for a residential service it's not one that they worry about their routers working with.
Sky don't support VPN, their Netgear routers will work with it but not the Sagem and you cannot force them to supply the router you want as it's luck of the drawer which one is sent out.
It may be that changing router or connection to the network would be the easiest route to take.

By changing my connection to the network does that mean a different ISP as well as a different router that has an ethernet connection? If it's just the router what should I ask for / be looking for?

    Thanks

You would probably need to get advice from someone using AOL but I would think getting a router would be a good start. Failing that switch from USB to ethernet as that may stabilise the connection for you.

I use madasafish with their supplied Voyager wireless router - never had any problems using VPN with my work laptop.

  • I've used a VPN on both AOL and BT, both work if you buy a new router. Get the cheapest one you can, less frill = more chance of working

They don't offer support for VPN clients rather than actually being capable of connecting via a VPN once on an AOL connection.

I have AOL ( although do not use their own software ) and a Netgear router connected directly to my ethernet port. My company use a Cisco VPN client and it works everytime and never times out. So, would be more inclined to look at your physical connection ( i.e. modem/connections ) rather than AOL themselves.
