hospital stay and no benefits

hi hope some one can help us, my dad had a serious accident resulting in spinal cord injuries and will be in hospital for about another 6 months or so, he was receiving invalidity benefits care allowance and mobility, we knew certain benefits would stop but we have been informed they will all stop leaving my mother with her disability money and nothing else.
my father will get nothing while in hospital even though he still has bills to pay direct debits ect and no money coming in,my siblings and i are doing what we can to help but i cant believe that the benefits people could stop all his money leaving him in hospital worrying about my mum and bills, he is already saying that when his halo comes off in about 12 weeks he wil discharge himself as he cant afford to stay in hospital, i am besides my self with worry about what the future hold for my dad and mum and hope that someone can give some advice about anything that my parents would be allowed to claimfor to ease the burden a little as things are not too good just now, ty and hope to hear from someone soon

I can understand why benefits such as carers allowance would stop whilst someone was in hospital but am as confused as the OP as to how her dad's home is to be maintained with such extensive loss of benefit-it's not as if he has been taken into a home and is never likely to go home again.I hope someone can advise you further on this but I am as bemused as you are, as if you haven't got enought o worry about!

My husband had a stroke and came out of hospital he had his IB backdated for his stay but not his DLA either care or mobility.

The reason being your care and mobility needs are being taken of care while you are hospital. So you are not paying out for it.

hi calley thanks for that, i think my dad will be in for a total of 7 months all going well and he dosnt sign himself out, do you think they will back date my dads IB for that time, also did your husband receive anything after the 4 week period to pay debts or bills etc

I think your Mum will have to apply in her name for whatever she may be entitled to. It's a waste of everyone's time because it will all need changing again when your Dad comes home.

We did not apply for IB until my husband came out of hospital after nearly 3 and half months.

They only back date 3 months. We had started a claim before he went in to hospital but never sent it off. But as you can imagine. I really did not have time to think about it. As christmas was near the end of his stay as well. So had other things on my mind.

Does the ward have a social worker they might be able to help you.

As Mojisola said you mother might well have to claim her self and then stop the claim when your dad comes home.

    All the best.
