Comet's "specially trained" fitters

Options
I paid for the peace of mind of having Comet's "specially trained" fitters fit my dishwasher I bought from them in July.

This was a mistake. The two men appeared, moaned at me about my kitchen being small and awkward (silly me for thinking this was their job?), but plumbed it in to the mains and left the waste pipe hanging in the sink. Ok, i thought, fair enough, I don't mind if the waste pipe goes into the sink that much (I was just so pleased to finally have a DW). Then they grumpily left - you'd have thought they were doing me a favour, not that I'd paid for a service...

I found out only yesterday that they had not screwed on one of the fittings properly and as such the pipe has been slowly dripping ever since. All of the laminate flooring in my flat is ruined. This was fixed simply by screwing it a little tighter, a child could have done it.

I will be taking this up with Comet and have the word of a plumber that they were negligent, but just wanted to warn anyone so that others can avoid the bother - it is not worth it! You can imagine the upheaval this has caused - my flat has been very slowly flooded.

  • That's awful! Let us know what sort of response you get from Comet.

I have found that it is often better to make use of the main retailers (ie Currys, Comet etc) cheaper prices, and then use a reliable local plumber / fitter to install the appliance. I have had nothing but trouble paying for installation the shop.
  • I will let you know what their response is. Both the man who is hopefully redoing my floor AND a plumber have said that Comet is notorious for this kind of thing - so please don't risk it and just pay a proper plumber - I wish I had as now my flat is in all kinds of upheaval and I am probably going to end up paying some kind of excess on the insurance even if it does pay out.

Ho hum. When Comet delivered my washing machine, the delivery men were appalling. They (a) scratched two big gouges down my front door; (b) spilled mucky water all over my living room carpet; (c) spotted the pool of mucky water and said "oh, that'll wipe up" (it didn't); (d) refused to wire in the machine because it was a "spur" (if that means anything) and would have taken them 10 minutes longer (I know, because I did it myself).

In my book, this makes them clumsy, rude and lazy.

In comparison, the people I wrote and spoke to in Comet's compensation department were very understanding and we settled quickly and reasonably. If you explain the facts and list your costs, I think you should get satisfaction from them. It will come out of Comet's insurance - no reason it should come out of yours.

It took a load of phone calls and e mails ( they don't respond to e mails so don't bother ) and two damaged fridges before they delivered one that wasn't damaged.

I don't know how they make any money.

  • Comet have been sent a very strongly worded letter complete with photos of the damage. The letter has been looked at and "beefed up" by my local Trading Standards dept (because my mum works there :) ).

I will let you know what their response is.

I agree, "my" men were also lazy and rude. Seems Comet employ a load of cowboys! I hope I have a good response as you did Stonk.

I absolutely detest Comet. They mucked up our installation of a gas cooker.
I find their customer service to be one of the worst in the industry.
GRRRRRR they make me so angry

    You Know where to come.....................
I'm back after a break :money:
  • I have just had a phonecall from Comet apologising and offering to come and inspect my floor.

Well hello, but the floor has just been replaced - did they expect me to wait around for three weeks not even knowing if they would give me a reply?

I said they can still come and see the damp walls which I have not yet redecorated, mouldy furniture etc, so they are going to arrange a visit. Plus they have plenty of photos of the floor anyway, and the damaged laminate.
  • They have now been and they say they can't do anything as the floor as been replaced. Apparently I should have been living in the mouldy damp this whole time whilst they got around to visiting me, according to them? Funny that.

When pressed, they offered £150 as a goodwill gesture, which I suppose I have no choice but to accept, but really it doesn't cover the upset this has caused (ok so insurance has paid for it mostly but it has been hell trying to live in the place whilst it is being sorted and I'm now having trouble getting someone to redecorate it for xmas!)

I will never buy Comet again, I'm relatively young so they've lost a lifetime of business from me and my family! Which isn't much I suppose, to them, but still.
