Radiator covers

Home makeover programmes on TV always seem to install radiator covers. Do these cut down the amount of heat?

At the moment we do not have these covers and there are dark marks above the radiators, probably the heat has caused them over time.

When we redecorate in the new house we are moving to I'm wondering whether to install radiator covers or maybe put a shelf above the radiator to stop these marks - or are shelves old fashioned now?

Yes they will cut down the heat output as they restrict the air flow rate. Difficult to know by how much but I would guess about 20%. Putting a shelf over a radiator (10% reduction) or a piece of furniture will also reduce output but not by as much.
