Virus preventing internet access

I don't know how but my home PC has picked up a virus (we use ZoneAlarm and AVG free versions and update regularly), and it seems to have stopped us from being able to access the internet.
We have a broadband connection and the modem is working ok, but when we try and use Explorer or Netscape to get online it says that it can't find the server. We are desperately trying to get rid of the virus but AVG says it can't heal the files and is only giving the option to delete them, which we're reluctant to do as they're Windows files and we're not sure if they are important.
Can anyone help? I'm wondering if we should call in the professionals to sort the problem...
If it helps, the virus name begins with the letters EID and is then followed by a sequence of numbers and underscores.
Thanks!

I would delete them if the antivirus gives you that option. If you are unsure, do a google search for the virus and see what other info you can find out about it.Torgwen..........
