First time ever!

For the first time in my long life ever, I failed to notice my current account balance and I overdrew. This has incurred a charge of about £60 I think. The annoying thing is that last week, I actually asked if I needed an appointment to discuss the transfer of money from various accounts as I will shortly need easy access to more than is usually in my current account. Is there any way I can ask for this charge to be refunded?.

When the machine said "No funds available for withdrawal today", I half expected my card had been cloned, so when the real reason was explained to me, I considered a charge to be the easy option.

You can ask, at the end of the day they can only say no.
Do you have a number of products with them (loans, insurance, credit cards etc) - if so hint that you are thinking of leaving and if they have any sense they will refund as a gesture of goodwill.
It may also be a good idea to have an agreed overdraft facility in place just in case there is a next time> I would suggest that you will have more luck in person rather than on the phone.

In the past I have successfully had the charges by phoning up to query it and then asking if, as a long standing customer who has never done this before, there is any way to review this charge. This has worked successfully with both NatWest and A&L.

I had a friend in a similar position and told her to write to the bank, point out her previous good credit record and apologise for her error. I said if she asked nicely she might be lucky, especially if she said she hoped the error could be overlooked and her money refunded because she would like to continue business with them for many years to come. They wrote back telling her she would not be allowed to get away with it again but they were willing just this once to refund her money, which they have done.

Try it, you have nothing to lose.

I have been with them over 50 yrs. I have never had any loan from them. I have numerous ISA's, Instant Saving account and my current account. All other money is banked elsewhere.

It would seem then that I might have a good chance of recovering my money. Unfortunately it was a new girl on the counter. Many of the older staff know me and address me by name when I enter. You have now given me an overwhelming urge to visit them tomorrow and yes, I may just make the suggestion I will be seeking an alternative bank.

    Will report back.

When was the charge applied? If it was today then I would call them up now rather than wait till tomorrow as it will then be over 24 hours and the fee may be applied automatically.

    TOTAL REFUND OF CHARGES!

After a night of wondering, I've been to town and to my branch of Halifax. I asked to see someone, possibly the manager because I was not happy. In the absence of the manageress, I saw her deputy.

After explaining how this charge came about, and of my accounts etc, I suggested I might have to consider the future regarding banking with them and wondered how long they would have allowed me to sink deeper spending money that wasn't there.

I was told that the she would refund the charge there and then.

It was then that she told me that in her opinion, these charges should not be there and that there is a big question over them which are being investigated but it might take ages to abolish them.

So, Martin Lewis, you Patron Saint of Moneysavers, you hero and champion of many, thanks a bunch, I owe you one.

Well done - you see, it pays to question (people assume that because banks and other institutions apply charges as it is "policy" then it must be right. As we have seen from endowments and other scandals, this is not the case. And where that fails, sometimes good old fashioned customer service can play a part as you found out!).
