Sealing work-surface

I have moved into a property with a recently fitted kitchen including a wooden work-surface, rather like a butchers block. I'm not sure if it has been previosly sealed but there are black marks from hot pans and any stain e.g. tea leaves a mark that is difficult to remove.

Firstly, is there a way I can remove the marks and secondly what is the best way to seal the surface and protect it.

TIA

Mr T

The only way I can think to remove the marks would be to sand the work surface - I remember my mum doing this successfully when I was little.

To seal it you clean it and give it a liberal dose of linseed oil with a cloth. Don't use or put anything on the surface for 24 hours after though. You should do this once a month to keep it best protected.
