It is not a simple answer!

Cheap way is you buy a Forclosed Home - apparently the suburbs of LA are sprawling - not sure if the coast properties are - unless you are ready to commute for more than 2 hours each way on the clogged freeways. Apparently the numbers of cars = the population of LA - so just imagine.

Practical - donno what is that? Buying a house is a slog.

BTW I hope this is not a trick question or some kind of spam - which it may be because why wuld u post this question in a UK website. Anyways good luck.
Recession - if you are forced to drink beer at your home.
Depression - if you have no beer to drink at all!
I don't see any of the above - so where is it (recession)?
