How do I play AVI files? I'm sure that my old computer used nero but it's saying I need to pay for it? What can I download for free that will let me play my films?
Thanks for any help

Just because you made a mistake doesn't mean you are a mistake.

WMP as it comes will play hardly anything, and it's an awfully slow and bloated piece of software. You can, of course, install the necessary codecs and get it playing most things.
VLC will play most things without needing codecs installed. It's got a horrid interface, mind you. They say it's genetic, they say he can't help it, they say you can catch it - but sometimes you're born with it0 -

Remember .AVI is only a wrapper and the actual vide/audio inside could be anything, be it DivX, xViD etc. Therefore you need the actual codecs for what's inside the AVI, GSpot program is a good program to tell you what codecs are used by the .avi file you are trying to play.
VLC does seem to do a good job. It's PAC not PAC Code, it's MAC not MAC Code, it's PIN not PIN Number, it's ATM not ATM Machine, it's LCD not LCD Display, it's DVD not DVD disc... It's no one not noone, It's a lot not alot, It's got not gotten... Panini is the plural of panino - there is no S!!(OK my English isn't great, the sciences, maths & IT are my strong points!)0
