changing start up programs

I wonder if anyone can help me with changing the start up programs( i.e disabling them without entirely deleting from the system). I have got too many of these programs which seem to slow the boot process!
I have tried the conventional way of going in options for each program and doing it that way for some, but others just persist!!!
How to go about from mycomputer/control panel to getting rid of them! HELP
I run a windows xp home.
cheers.

There are lots of startup managers out there.

I use the one that comes with Spybot S+D
(You have to tick 'Advanced' in the Mode menu for extra tools to appear

Here is a screenshot. Clicking on the blue arrow on the right of the pane shows information on each object you highlight

Not sure about the fuctionality of XP home, but could be worth a try, it works for XP Pro.
Click on the start menu, then Run, type msconfig, at this point the system configuration utility will appear, click on the start up tab they you can select what runs at start up.
Hopefully XP Home is the same...........................

    Try this
    Start>run>type 'msconfig'

Select selective startup, click on startup tab and uncheck the items that you require, do a search on google for the process names as some of these items need to be there when windows starts.

    Good Luck
