Card I didn't know I had

Just received a statement from Halifax for my Platinum Credit Card

I don't have a Platinum Halifax card ,or ANY Halifax card for that matter.

What's going on?

Has someone else opened a card using my details?

Just going to call Halifax to find out what they are up to

Bill

Only people who can really tell you are Halifax themselves.

    Is there any outstanding balance?

It is also be worth getting a copy of all 3 credit reports to see if there are any applications for credit which you do not recognise. Obviously if there are more potential problems on the horizon then the sooner you find out about them the better.

finally make sure Halifax take your concerns seriously.

You may have been given one when opening some other Halifax account.

If it's your first statement, then chances are you can catch it early - get copies of your credit reports immediately and waste no time acting on them. Get the Halifax to put an immediate stop on the card and question them about the application.

Could it be that you were approached at an airport/supermarket/shopping centre/carpark etc by someone purporting to be "only conducting a survey on credit cards" ... and that you signed a piece of paper somewhere "just confirming that you'd completed the survey". And then you forgot all about it. Until now. It's one of the ways cc companies gain new customers. If this is the case, and you can confirm it, then you have every right to cancel the card with no penalties or consequences.

Or, imagine this scenario: your identity and credit history have been compromised, someone has applied for a credit card in your name. The fraudster may have diverted the card to a different address for delivery purposes, leaving you with just the statement.

As both scenariois are hypothetical at the moment, you should check with Experian, Equifax and CallCredit and see what's on your credit report. Call Halifax and find out more about this card, when it was applied for, the details given etc ... problem is, if you only have the statement but not the card, it might not have the full account number on it, and if it's fraudulent then the fraudster would've given a different set of security details, which you will fail ... this means Halifax will then refuse to grant you access to that account until you can prove the account is really yours. For the time being, you're just Joe Bloggs who has received a statement for a card that belongs to someone else.
