    Hi everyone,

Currently planning a new kitchen and finding that choosing the worktop is becoming the main consideration in the design and therefore a real headache!

Wood is our first choice in terms of how it looks. However thinking of the practicalities I would have thought it's the least hygienic as it's very porous and would be hard to properly clean and keep rid of germs (bear in mind I'm very messy when cooking/pouring wine/tea etc!) I'd hate to pour a glass of wine and have a red wine mark ruin the whole worktop from day one. Also having a look at other forums seem to say that areas around the taps rot easily. Any advice on this? I'm not afraid of maintenance but not if I have to sand and re-oil every time I spill something - practicality has to be the first consideration.

I don't think laminate would be suitable from what I've read.
Granite is one option but tbh I'm not that in love with it - not keen on the speckled look and also it's £££££.

    From reading http://www.kitchen-worktops-plus.co.uk/compare.html
it seems that quartz might be a good option. But I'm pretty stuck.

Can anyone help? Price is of course a factor but I'd like to know the pros and cons of each first and take into account price later!
  • I have seen a fab website that tells you all about quartz and granite worktops. I recomended this to a friend who actually bought her worktops from them and she was thrilled to bits.
I'm having mine done for christmas in what they call Savanna Quartz which is black with sparkly mirror bits in.
    Their website address is www.wowtops.co.uk
hope this helps and good luck.

  • Not sure about who is who on this post but in my hunt for quartz worktops and other kitchen items I've found this forum very useful http://www.kitchensfitted.co.uk/KitchenForum/
Good advice given and a lot of info on kitchens in general
  • Does anyone else have quartz mirrored worktop that chips incredibly easily or have I just been unlucky.

Cant believe how well off all of you are ;)

We had to replace 3 worktops recently. Granite, which we've had in the past was far too expensive. Wood worktops look great initially but we wanted ones that didnt need regular oiling to prevent stains and discolouration. Gloss laminates show scratches.

So after trawling Ikea, Wickes and Homebase we opted for B&Q matt laminate oak woodblock effect @ £65 apiece. Very happy with result :)

I've just had a quote from granite transformations. Accepting that it isn't pure granite, the worktops do seem easier to maintain and look just as good.

Works out slightly cheaper than decent granite and less mess to fit.

Waiting for them to start to negotiate on price;)

Take a look at Duropal Enhanced Semi-matt in Quadra profile. Very nice laminate tops, and in some colors resemble corian.
  • I am having a new kitchen fitted and the worktops are a real headache. I have read through all the posts and found them all very imformative. but what I now want to know is the only place I have see the worktops I want in B&q the black with the sparklie bits in it. Has anyone used these and what do you think. could you recommend them. In the mean time I will follow up some of these links.
    HOW MUCH ?
