work on flat being done

Does anyone have any advice here? I live in a council flat, and they are currently doing work on it. They originally said the work would be done in 5 weeks and in September, it later turned out to be October, and the contracter stated 3 weeks. Work being done: Kitchen completely gutted, replastered, new kitchen put in, new tiles, combi boiler thing, repainted walls and wookwork, new floor. Living room: new gas fire, walls stripped. wallpapered and woodwork painted. Bathroom: replastered, new tiles (old ones taken out ),new shower, newtaps, bath panel, new floor. etc.Halve the work has been done and this is week number 4. Everywhere is dusty, not clean and I don't understand why such major works are being done in a one bedroom flat that I have to live in. Sorry, this is the short version of the situation. Is there anything that I can do regarding inconveince?

Check your Tennancy Agreement - the small print may make some provision (although is is normally unlikly). The Landlord will aways argue that that the improvements are for your benifit, regardless of the associated inconvience that takes place while they are being undertaken.

Now - if they cause damage (eg. hammer dropping on your TV and breaking it) - thats a diffrent matter - you would have a claim against the contractors insurance.

Therefore to summarise: Inconvience/dirt - no claim .... but direct damage - a possible claim.
  • Thanks for that. Its all a pain in the backside. They did damage the carpet in the living room. There is a nice hole left thanks to them not moving a sofa properly. I've let both council and contracter know and I have to get a quote for new carpet now. It's a bit hard to do that while I'm stuck here between 8am-4.30pm Mon-Fri. Weekends I have to catch up on stuff I haven't done during the week. Fun! Still it's unfar though and not very hygenic or comfortable.
