    300mm is the norm.
and a min of 1m from next doors property, as a general guide.
some of theses rules are not set in stone. local councils differ in their rulings.

    property or boundary?

It can't be a metre from the boundary which we take to be the fence panels as they are exactly in the middle of our driveways. If it's a metre from their property it's not a problem as their drive is the same width as ours - about 2.5m not including the area where the fence runs down.

Planning_officer; there are quite a few extensions of this kind in this street and all of them go up to the fence boundary, even the 2 storey ones. There is a 2 storey one that is being built at the moment which is only a few doors from us and it goes right up to the fence - in fact their scaffolding is on the neighbours drive! The drives run right down the side of our houses through to our back gardens so the extensions are not actually near the house next door.
