Hi,
I could really use some help with this. I have an old hardrive that I would like to try and use as extra storage if possible.
The Hardrive is a Maxtor 160 GB, model 6Yi60M004725A. I cannot see anything about jumpers on the hard drive at all? I have installed it on the computer and my BIOS can see it but I cant seem to access it. I have tried going to computer management/storage/disk management and this is were the problem seems to be  I can see the drive but it is 'unknown' and 'unreadable' Does this mean the hard drive is knackered? I guess it might have been taken out when the motherboard went.
Also, when i switch the PC on, I get 2 beeps and a message saying something along the lines of unable to find parallel drive, hit F1 to continue.

OK, the information for the jumpers is on the main label on the top of the drive. It's a very small diagram so easy to miss. If it isn't jumpered properly, you could get the errors you are having.
If it is jumpered properly, yes it means it is "knackered" but it may be in the logical sense rather than physical - for example if the partition table was corrupted.
If you go to the Maxtor website, you can download and install Maxblast which is the manufacturers software suite that you can use to diagnose and partition the HDD.0 -
I really must be a lost cause, I just cannot see anything about jumpers anywhere. What do Jumpers look like? I spent quite a bit of time looking online yesterday but am still none the wiser lolz. The closest thing i can find is a barcode which says K,G,C,D.
Thanks for the advice about Maxblast, I will give that a go

edited to say: I was just looking on the maxtor website and it says on the diagram 'jumper block, for factory use only' Guess that means I can't change the settings?0 -
Yours may not be exactly the same as this but if you look at this link you will see the jumper info near the top left above the C E mark.

It should be similar on your drive. It's my problem, it's my problem
If I feel the need to hide
And it's my problem if I have no friends
And feel I want to die0 -
Thanks for the picture, there is nothing similar to that on mine, there is just a box which says 'serial ATA' above the CE mark.
your help is much appreciated,

If it's a SATA drive there are no jumpers to configure. Jumpers are only an issue on older PATA (Parallel ATA)/ IDE/UDMA drives. This could give a clue as to the parallel drive error you're getting. It could refer to either a hard drive or optical drive. Is your CD/DVD still working OK?"Hey, if love is blind, how come lingerie is so popular?" Cochrane. P673 TNG.0

Thanks for the help
Yes, the dvd drive is still working fine, I only get the message/hit F1 to continue with the hard drive plugged in.
Its starting to sound like I have a very knackered harddrive  oh well, it was worth a try to get it going!
