I had this installed on my old pc, but it hasn't transferred over now we are on Vista.

Could anyone post the link for the free software they do (looked on the website, but a bit bamboozled). That seemed to work fine for us in the past.

Thanks

  • don't do it.
AVG 8 is absolutely dreadfull. get yourself something like Avast instead.

I'm pretty neutral on whether it's any good. It does not work at all well on my low spec (another name for old) computer but is ok on my newish laptop so its horses for courses really. I went to avast on the old one which also works well.

What you actually should have said is that "I, personally, don't like AVG (for some completely undisclosed reason)".

Other users find AVG 8, both the free and paid-for versions, quite acceptible in their environment.

Agreed. I've heard a lot of people saying that AVG 8 is too bloated for it's own good. I must admit I'm one of them. I had AVG7 for ages, loved it. Version 8 just slowed my PC to a crawl. So I ditched it and loaded Avast instead, which so far has been very good.

At the end of the day, there a several very good free anti-virus packages out there. Try them and see which suits your needs best. Nothing lost by installing, trying, then removing if you don't get on with it.

Also AVG8 does not do realtime http traffic scanning. Avast does if you want a freebie.

Are you sure that you downloaded the free version? e.g. from here
If you hover your mouse over the AVG icon in the system tray, does it say 'AVG Anti-Virus Free'? If you right click on the AVG icon and then Update now, does it?
