Now....I have some laundry to dry tonight so dryer vent hose will be out the window, what's the bets the MOTHs family comes to roost in my kitchen,

Why not turn the light off when you leave the kitchen, then
    a) the moths won't see the light so won't bother to investigate the kitchen
    b) think of the money you will save with not having the light on !!!!! ;-)

I'm not very keen on moths either
Don't mind spiders at all though. Not that I like to see them crawl in the bathroom or kitchen etc., but I have no fear of them. I just scoop them in a glass and deposit them outside. I would pick them up with my fingers but I'm afraid I might hurt them.

If this ever happens again put honey on the windowsill (and leave the window open:p), the sweet smell draws the bat out. Please please, whatever you do don't kill it. Bats are protected species and their numbers are dwindling, they are a very useful resource in eating insects (especially mosquitoes;)) etc.

Thanks for the info - this thread has taught me, if it ever happens again, the first thing to do is log on to MSE and ask for help :D

I did ask google for advice, but most of the results were american sites and the most common advice was 'shoot it' :(

One of the suggestions was to hold up a sheet in front of it when it flies towards you, and catch it in the sheet. The sudden appearance of the sheet confuses its sonar, or something. Didn't think this sounded much fun for the bat, but anyway I spent about 30 minutes leaping around the room with a sheet (feeling pretty stupid :o) and eventually it just headed for the open window and was gone!

Felt quite priveleged to have had such a close up view of a bat though - they are wonderful creatures :)

Now that's a good idea! There's a poundland near me, better go and see if I can get one. Will also help me catch my budgies when they fly out of the cage "without permission"...

    I have one of these

which is good for flies, wasps and small spiders, but the spider catcher would be good for those big scary ones  that always come out when my husband (who has no fear of them) is at work.

I've cautiously gone round the kitchen and there is no sign of it, perhaps it flew out of the window.
It's probably waiting somewhere to fly out when you least expect it ;)

  • I do sympathise with you. :)

Not scared of anything except spiders, but if there's one in the house, I can't rest until I know it's gone! I would never kill one and I'm lucky because my hubby will get rid of anything in a jar for me. As we car share to/from work it's rare we're not in the house together.

But I know when we have kids I'm going to have to get used to them. I don't want to pass my fear onto children. Hubby used to be worse than me, but he's taught himself to get over it. I'm starting by ignoring the little ones in the bathroom/kitchen. Next step is to look at the huge ones in jars when hubby catches them. Then I hope to be able to hold the jar. If I can do that, then at least I can get rid of them.

I know it's a stupid fear as daddy long legs don't bother me at all. And they fly!

We think we've got bats in our loft! Not sure, but excited if we have! :)

Excited you have bats in your loft...

I never used to be bothered by creepy crawlies at all used to pick up worms, spiders, caterpillars etc. Then when I was little, I fell upon an ants nest and got bitten/stung to bits. Can't stand anything creepy/crawly now, just the sensation/thought of the thing crawling on me, shivers up my spine no end. I'll button it now :silenced: as this is turning into a discussion so in the wrong place.

i'll swap, your moth for the enormous spider in my living room at the moment. my skin is prickling all over, i'm having trouble keeping my asthma under control but i still feel really ashamed of myself for not being able to get rid of it. it looks too big to go up the dyson pipe, not so say my friend on msn (he won't come round and help, it's only a mile or two, how mean lol!) and my husband in the pub. it's in a corner near a lot of stuff - bookcase, toyboxes etc. so if i try to do anything and i fail, it runs away never to be seen and i'll have panic attacks every time i'm in the house. isn't that silly. if i do nothing and it moves while i'm not looking, same problem. the easiest thing would be to get rid of it now but i can't. i got the hoover out but even the thought of sucking it up (if it doesn't run) makes me shudder because i can't even bear the thought of holding the pipe while the spider is inside it. i can't put a box over it because thew skirting board is in the way, it won't work. i can't get close enough to make anything work. husband won't be home for a while but he suggested building a lego fortress ... hmmm ... his friends suggest using the digital camera to blind it then bashing it with the sweeping brush while it's dazed. big help

my ventolin inhaler is in the kitchen - should i take my eyes off the spider and fetch it, or stay here and hope i don't get too bad before my husband gets in? what i really ought to do is feed the rabbits, put the baby to bed and go to bed myself but i just can't. one day i missed an entire day at work because there was a spider over the door. how stupid is that?
