You need to tell the software that you are on a permanent internet connection. No idea on how to do that with AVG as I refuse to use that POS due to its 50% VBN test failures and the fact it doesn't do active realtime HTTP scanning which is a bit daft as dodgy websites are the most common route of infection.

It sounds like AVG tried to update before your wireless connection was established. Try right clicking on your AVG icon in the system tray and then Update now. You could change the scheduled update time so this doesn't happen.

    Ignore the previous rant!

I assume you have the free download version of AVG 8 which only allows you to set a scheduled time for downloading updates, so it always reports that the connection has failed; I don't think it's your router. They're trying to move away from providing a free download so are reducing the functions in free version, IMO, and this is just part of that move.

If you right click the icon in the systray, you can select Update Now.

The Update Manager settings within free AVG 8 have two options - 'Periodically' (greyed out so unusable) and 'At a specific time interval' which allows a time to be set for a daily download. There's no option for automatic update on startup, so whenever you launch the internet, AVG automatically reports that the connection to the update has failed.

Not if the scheduled update time is set to a suitable time after the normal boot-up time, to allow the wireless connection to establish.

There's only the option to set one time per day, so I'm sure that would be fine if the PC was always booted up at, say, 9.00am, then the update set for 9.05am or something. The OP would still get the message for 5 mins, but then it would clear, presumably. I've never tested it as our home PC is booted up at different times each day, so I just take the manual update option as soon as the internet is launched for the first time. It's no big deal for me, but the kids tend not to do it if they boot the PC up first.

No because the internet connection would be established at 9:05AM, so no update error message! Update at boot time would be worse for a wireless connected laptop, as the anti-virus will always initialise before the wireless connection.

No it wouldn't as the message comes up in the systray at login. Bored with this now.
