Lovely. I almost feel as if I am there already! Thank you Blue264. More of the same... please!
The people are fabulous. The public transport is cheap and more than sufficient. The food is familar and to die for, and all you need to make everything feel right in the World is a beautiful sunset over the Bay Of Naples, a bowl of gnocchi alla Sorrentina and a bottle of Lacryma Christi. :beer:0 -
Wow. High praise indeed!!!
Thanks to everyone for all the advice, I really appreciate it.0 -
Sorrento is not great for parking so I wouldn't bother with a car if you are staying there, I agree about the sunsets and we loved Capri, we went by speedboat from Priano (sp), I can understand why Gracie Fields went to live there no contest versus Rochdale LOL...0

There are so many fine restaurants to choose from...
I had a good meal with a fabulous view at La Minervetta..

You enter the hotel at street level up on Via Capo via a white wrought iron archway and go down a flight of stairs to the restaurant and main body of the hotel which clings to the cliff face.
We picked a good night because there were two cruise ships in the bay having firework displays so it was quite spectacular.
I remember the pasta being excellent, but the Valpolicella and view overwhelmed the rest of the dinner.
If you like fish restaurants, you can easily spend £50+ per head at Sorrento's finest, especially those in Piazza Tasso, the main square in the centre of town.
The best dinner I had was at La Fenice.
It's a lovely place down a side street at the bottom of Via Capo where it meets Corso Italia, very easy to miss but the food was fabulous! It was also the only time I bumped into the local Mafia whilst in Sorrento. He was very gracious and friendly, he had drinks sent to everyone's tables, but it was also a wee bit obvious that he wasn't a regular guy. The burly bodyguards by his car outside kind of gave that away, but it just added to the flavour of the evening.

My favourite starter was Gli Gnocchi alla Sorrentina

tomato sauce

Another fine restaurant that may suit your special occasion is...

And if you're really pushing the boat out, why not book a table at one of the two finest hotels in town...

For the rest of your honeymoon, be warned, the pizzas at Fauno Bar on Piazza Tasso can be quite alcoholicAfter one particularly intoxicating pizza, I asked the chef and he admitted that the onoins were soaked overnight in red wine and the mushrooms in Limoncello.
I hope you both have a wonderful time! :beer:0 -
Sorrento is my favourite place too. We always stay in residence tasso, an apartment just off the main square Piazza Tasso. https://www.areavacanze.com
You dont need a car at all as there is a bus from the airport, used to be about 6 euro, that takes you right to the centre of Sorrento. There is a train station in Sorrento and the Sita busses will take you anywhere along the Amalfi Coast. Definite places to visit are Positano, Amalfi, Pompei and Ravello.
You mention Salerno. Is this where you are staying?
As for restaurants, there are so many to choose from and most are fabulous. Try the one just round the corner from the square. As you stand on the bridge looking down to the marina take the road down to your left and the restaurant is on the right hand side, It has big double doors and you go downstairs. Very nice. Another place to go is the Foreigners bar, the best views in Sorrento are here. This is further down this road and round the corner to the right.
Stay away from Luigis bar, its called Chapmans. Totally rubbish and rip off drinks.
Another is a little Trattoria which is again down the road to the left from the bridge and turn left past the Pink Elephant drink shop, turn left and its on the left in the little alleyway. No menus provided, the chef will ask if you like sea food and then bring you loads of wonderful dishes.
Oh I want to go again0 -
thank you, the gnocchi will definitely be tried
and the bar with alco pizza sounds fab!!
thanks for the warnings too
i can hardly wait!!Nonny mouse and Proud!!
