Double glazed door & side panel

Options
Hi everyone,
I would be very grateful for any replies/advice. I want to replace my current front door - not very secure/draught-proof - with a double glazed door. At the same time I want to replace a glass panel to the side of the door with double glazing - it is currently plain glass & not very secure, & is also at the bottom of the stairs & therefore not safe if anyone fell.
I have been quoted £1195.10 to replace both, including installation, 10 year guarantee & removal of all debris. The door is w 900 x h 2100; the panel is 1000 x 2100 (glass panel 1000 x 1200).
Is this a reasonable quote for the work?

Thanks

Caroline

If the glass side panel and door are basic designs ie just obs glass and say a panel in the bottom of the door then yes its a bit high but not that far out .
If i was pricing that I'd go for about £900- £950
  • if theres no fancy glass design to door id say that was ott .with standard full door panel door and side panel id say 900 glass designs vary greatly in price especially when you get to bevels
if you think peoples advice is helpfull please take the time to clicking the thank you button it gives great satisfaction

It's a bit over-priced, but without seeing the actual work required it's difficult to say. Worst case is that you're paying a couple of hundred pounds over the odds, but you're not being given a complete rip-off price. The quality of the fitting is important, so ask a few questions about who does their fitting (e.g. in-house or self employed fitters). Best advice though would be to get at least 3 quotes. You'll probably answer your own question that way.

Thanks very much. I'm waiting on another couple of quotes; but I now know what 'ballpark' price I'm looking at.

  • There seems to be a suggestion in a couple of threads on double glazing, that self-employed fitters are somehow inferior to company men.Not the case in my view.Myself and others i know in the trade always do the best job we can regardless of employment status.I am a self employed joiner but do some fitting for mates companies when they are really busy and i know of several joiners who do the same thing.

BTW,£900-£1000 is about right, depending on spec.

It's a tricky one, because you get your good ones and your bad ones, like with any trade. The advice I received was that if a double glazing company uses self employed fitters then you are taking more of a chance on the quality of the fit than you generally would do if the fitters were employed in house. It's certainly debatable, but the logic of it makes some sense to me, especially as those employed directly by a double glazing company would be fitting windows day in day out, whereas the self employed ones may not be.

Personally, if I knew a top-class fitter, I would source the windows myself and get him to fit them for me. But I don't, hence my view on in-house fitters. Apologies if I've got the backs up of any windows fitters..
