Car Insurance For >75 + Name driver.

Well with me being 17, and insurance being stupidly expensive for me, my grandad has kindly offered to have insurance in his name as he currenty has no policies and to make use of his NCB. However he is over 75 and I cant seem to find insurance quotes for him, Confused.com wont allow it either. So what I need is an insurance company that will allow a policy for him, and me and the age of 17 without a licence as a named driver.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I'm a bit confused. If you have no licence, how can you be a named driver?
I would suspect that most insurers will see straight through this anyway (assuming that is just a grammatical error). You have to declare who is going to be the main driver as well so that is going to put the policy up. Whose car is the insurance proposed to be on? What you are contemplating sounds rather like insurance fraud so if you could supply some more details it may help.0 -
Sorry mate I didnt make myself too clear.
It will be a shared car, We live local and will probably both use it at some point so there is no fraud involved.
I will be using it to learn to drive in hence the no licence as yet. Just a provisional.
Edit: And the policy will be in my grandads name with his NCB and me as a name driver.0 -

That sounds much better. It is usually better to give full details to avoid confusion (especially when there is the risk of me seeing a post first. I don't need any help to get confused!).
I can see a couple of problems with what you propose. Firstly, you have to state where the vehicle will be kept. If the proposal is to keep it at your house then I am sure they would argue that that makes you the main driver.
Secondly, as you only have a provisional licence the premium is going to be high with you as a named driver although probably lower than just you insuring.

Cheers for reply.
First alterative wont allow it as I dont have a Full UK licence.
Saga wont allow it as I am under 21 years of age.
Cant see this working really. Zurich looks promising, will try them...0 -
I'll see if I can find out who my MIL is insured with. She is 80. I think though that she has used the same insurer for some years. Looking around the web, I notice that loads of companies will not insure at over 75. I guess a lot of them are with companies like Saga though and don't have a young driver on their policy.
Good luck. If I get any info from MIL tomorrow I will post back then.0 -
Thanks Bossyboots. Appreciated.0

Hi - try
https://www.liverpoolvictoria.co.uk
They will insure new policyholders up to 80 and charge quite a bit less extra than most companies for including a teenage driver.0 -
Excellent, Thanks. Just got a quote from them for 420 quid, Whereas with other companies I was getting quotes of over 1000 quid. Only concern is they dont ask if you have a full UK licence? Which I do not as I will be using the car to learn to drive in?0

Hi
I would strongly advise that you don't use your grandad's car to learn to drive. I would not like the wear-and-tear and extra risk on our car if we allowed a learner to use it to drive!
I would strongly recommend you book a course of lessons at a proper driving school. There are a number of reasons for this. A proper instructor is aware of (a) the requirements for passing the test - different from when your grandad passed, and (b) is well clued-up about current legislation and road conditions. And (c) you're using their car and the wear-and-tear on gears, brakes etc is their problem!
You can always use the car for practice, once you've learned the basics and while you're waiting for your test. But learning from scratch from your grandad's car....no, that is most definitely not advisable.
BTW I'm 70, passed test in 1971, been driving ever since. My husband is 70, been driving since the 1950s, has driven many thousands of miles of business. No way would any young relative use our car to learn to drive - we always steer them in the direction of a reputable driving school and 'give' a course of lessons as a present.
Best wishes

Hi there, You've misunderstod. It isnt my grandards car, Its mine. I was thinking of insurancing it in my grandards name to save money on insurance thats all. Wether it gets insured in his name or mine is irrelivent as I will still be using it to learn to drive in.
Thanks for the reply.0
