tempory car insurance for foreign drivers

Hi

I really hope that someone can help.

My parents are coming over from Australia in a few weeks and while they are here I would like them to have use of my car especially since they will be looking after our young soun while my husband and I go abroad.

I have a policy with m&S who when I took my policy out told me they could add my parents on for £10.00 no problems. I called them tonight to add them on and they have said they can not do it as they are not residents quite frustating as I would have taken out my policy with someone else who would do it otherwise.

I have tried norwich union, day insure (who norwich union told me could do it), virgin and the aa.

If anybody knows of an insurer it would be great.

Thanks

Click on 'Short-Term Policy', when it asks "What licence", select "international"

Probably not a good idea, it states on the first page before the quotation process "The eCar Short Term Insurance Policy is suitable for: .... Residents of the United Kingdom only".
  • Easy answer to this, get your parents to check if they have third-party cover to drive other cars on their own car insurance in Australia. This side of the world it's usually included with most policies. That way the cost to you is zero. ;)

I'm not expert on Autralian insurance practise, but surely if their policy did have a 'driving other cars' clause then it would only be given within strict territorial limits, not worldwide?

I would agree that it is unlikely that DOC would be covered for foreign use.

Churchill do offer temporary additional cover for upto 90 days for drivers who are not permanent UK residents, obviously that policy would need to be with churchill. The only problem is that to get a price to 'add' someone on to the policy temporarily, the policy needs to be 'set up' as they cant get a price to add someone to a policy that isnt set up. its a bit of a pain but the prices are usually fairly reasonable and if not you have your 14 cooling off period
  • The driving other cars benefit is cover provided to you personally to drive other cars on a third-party basis only. For example, even if you have comprehensive cover in the UK on your own car, the driving other cars benefit will only provide third-party cover when you drive someone else's car. But that's usually sufficient insurance cover to comply with the law, either in the UK or elsewhere. I still think the answer to this is for your parents to check with their car insurance company and/or policy document to see if their Australian policy covers driving in the EU. If it does, I'd suggest they bring their certificate of insurance and other documentation with them, just in case they need it.

    Thanks for everyones responses.

I am not wanting to change my insurer to add my parents on as I am from australia myslef I had a hard time getting an insurer to recognaise my insurance and time I held a licence for in australia.

My Dad is going to ring thier insurer in australia to see if they are covered hopefully they should be able to do something for them. They have had no claims between them for about 20 years each.

I am also going to go to a local insurance broker on monday and see if they can do anything.

I will post the solution (or failure) to hopellfy help anyone else in a similar situation.

    Cheers
  • Would be really interested to know how you go on with this as I am facing the same dilemma. My parents are here for 2 months from Australia and would like to let them use my car. Its the least I can do in return for letting me learn to drive on their's many years ago...

Ring up your own Insurers and add them to your own policy as temporary drivers
