Citibank CC Harassment or Scam?

Hi all,
Not sure if this is a scam or not. My wife just arrived home and told me that her Credit Card company had rang her at work demanding her debit card details over the phone to make payment on the account.
Now here's the strange bit.
Payment isn't due on the account until the 28th August!
The woman at the end of the phone was abusive and demanded my wifes debit card details so she could take payment. Luckily enough my wife refused and said she would be paying her account in the normal way and on time as usual (online). The woman didn't like this and kept demanding the card details. My wife just put the phone down on her.
Throughout the call the Citibank? person said she could verify who she was by telling my wife what the last payment on her account was (not that it would have got her anywhere).
In summary:
1. The Credit Card Company have never called my wife at work, they have no reason to, embarrassing my wife no end.
2. Payment isn't due on the account for another 3 weeks
3. The Citibank rep got flustered when my wife stated she would be paying in the normal way and not handing over her DC details.
Just wondered if anyone else has been in receipt of such wonderful Citibank service along these lines recently?

Definitely a scam0

Its possible this is some kind of elaborate identity theft. Perhaps someone has rummaged through your bin for a recent statement?
Make sure you shred all important info and if possible even burn it afterwards.0 -
Definitely not based on bin rummaging, we have been shredding everything for years.
My wife did pat me on the back after she told me about todays events (makes a change, she's normally kicking me up the backside), she says she took my advice on giving out information, don't do it!
You know, the more I think about it the more I think it could be an internal scam????
Whats to stop a company (as in this case, foreign, not in the UK) taking on a new employee, who comes in, manages to find accounts that are not due to be paid yet, rings around a number of these customers, grabs their DC details, then !!!!!!s off after a week or so saying they didn't want the job. Fleece the cards/accounts, or sell the account details on... Easy way to make some money if the companies checks are lax, or the employee has given false credentials.
Sounds elaborate, but could be possible???
I am probably talking out of my backside! I am no criminal mastermind btw, I am just the owner of a wild imagination :rotfl:.0 -
100% scam. Would bet my stooze pot on it."A child of five could understand this. Fetch me a child of five." - Groucho Marx0
