Standard advance rail tickets - changing times of travel

Hi,

Firstly apologies if this is posted in the wrong sub-forum or if it's been covered before. I've done a forum serach but can't find the answers I'm looking for.

I'm due to travel from Chester to London tomorrow. I booked my tickets some time ago. The standard advance ticket I have is meant to leave Chester at 15.03 but for circumstances out of my control I am unable to leave till around 18.00.

If I just hop on the train at 18.00 will I 'get away' with it? I don't travel my rail very often but last time I did I had a SAT and used it for a different time train with no problem. Is the worst that can happen that I have to pay the difference in fares?

Thanks in advance,

Squee

Is it a standard ticket that you just happen to have bought in advance or is it an advance, reduced fare, ticket?

If it's a standard ticket then it will be valid (assuming no peak hour restrictions) on the later train

If it's an advance ticket then you are very unlikely to get away with it. You won't pay the difference in fares - you'll have to buy a complete new ticket.

If you are not sure what is the exact wording on the ticket?

    Thanks for your help Dzug.

I don't actually have the tickets yet (I'm collecting them from a machine at the Station in the morning) but from my account on The Trainline it says that the ticket is a 'Standard Advance Single'. It seems to indictate that changes are permitted - £10 per ticket changing fee and the cost of the difference in fares. I'll just have to see what happens I guess.

    Thanks again,

    Squee

I thought you had to change the previous day but on checking that isn't so. You have to do it before the booked train departs - ie before 1500

So yes, you can change, at a price.
