Car Speeding questions
Hi ,
I'm trying to answer a question for one of my friends as we are all stumped. He bought a car a few months ago but didn't realise that
he should have received confirmation of ownership (can't remember
what the form is called) from the DVLA. He only realised last
month when his Road Tax was nearly finished and he hadn't received
a reminder for that. Anyway , he has filled in a form to get a replacement
(and paid his Road Tax). But as he has been doing lots of driving and does have a tendency to go a bit fast (he is a new driver) andis wondering
what would happen if he had been caught speeding with car between buying the car and last month when he filled in the new form to get the car properly
registered. How long after getting new confirmation of registration would he receive (if any ) any speed tickets.
Whilst , discussing this, one of my other friends hired a car for a few weeks in the summer and all the talk of speeding is making him panic also. . And so , does anybody know how long it would take for the DVLA
to catch up with him if he had a hire car and had been caught speeding ? Thanks

If the previous owner delcared they no longer owned the car on say... 26th May 2008, as long as you send off the slip now to say you took ownership on the 26th then no problem.
Otherwise there might be some complications0 -

The DVLA don't deal with speeding cases, it's down to the local police.
They have 14 days after the alleged offence to contact the registered keeper of the car regarding the allegation.
The keeper then has 28 days to tell them who was driving, (though if they don't, then another letter is usually sent giving another 28 days), so the short answer is that it can take quite a while for them to catch up with the miscreant!0 -

IIRC, there is no longer a time limit to notify the registered keeper.0 -
Sounds to me like your " friend " is trying his hardest to have to sit the Driving test again, or worse.:rolleyes:0

In the event he had been seen speeding and the police wanted to investigate, they would have contacted the previous keeper because they would still be registered as the keeper.
Assuming they informed the police who bought the car (assuming they could remember) the police would then come to your friend. The process would take about 1 - 3 months before your friend got the NIP. Your friend would then be required to say who the driver was, if he did not, he could be guilty of an offence.
For a hire car it would be the same 1 - 3 months.0 -
If the change of ownership forms haven't been returned then the previous owner will receive the NIPs etc. If they can't remember who they sold it to then the current owner cannot be traced.
I take it from the OP that the new owner has now filled in the info. In which case they might be contacted.Happy chappy0 -

just because hes a new drive does'nt mean he should adhere to the speed limits, in fact the limits should all be fresh in his head anywayNo Links in Signature by site rules - MSE Forum Team 20 -
