Error 553 from BT internet - help!

I got one of these emails today, saying I needed to verify alternate addresses so I can send emails from them. The email arrived in my Microsoft Outlook box. But what does it mean by 'alternate addresses'? The ones on my sub-accounts? Very confused.

Oh yeah this is great, we've just spent three hours this afternoon to try to fix my 74 year old father's email account from 100 miles away.

BT are their usual absolute incompetent selves and although we have rung previously (when together) for Dad to give consent for them to talk to me, they have failed to log that on the account so wouldn't talk to me initially.

It's only an issue if you use your own domain name (or a previous ISP account) rather than a .btinternet.com account. You have to go into your .btinternet account and add your "other" account before you can use the service you pay BT for. Dad has never used his btinternet account so we had no idea what the account/password was and trying to get Dad to sort it is a non-starter - bless him, he does bleeding well to use the internet and email as it is without trying to sort problems caused by BT's incompetence.

For info...BT/Yahoo rolled this out initially in May but had to withdraw it because of the problems see http://www.guardian.co.uk/technology/2008/may/15/yahoo.spam

We then discovered that they had done the same to us so we've had to solve that as well!

100 miles away, difficult over the phone.

I use this www.logmein.com I use this all the time and it is FREE for the basic version. You will need to talk your Father through installing a 'client' on his PC but after that you can access and fix his computer remotely.

After you have finished fixing it best to disable the program on your Fathers PC - just right click on the Icon on his PC in the bottom RH corner and click disable.

If you need to gain further access just get him to re-enable the program with a right click etc

    Good luck
    Paul
