What was the point of the OP?

Bleh, it was just a rant because I got annoyed with someone always using M$. Can't remember who, now.
But it generated a good discussion, so its all good ^^,0 -
I must say I do quite like the iMacs. Apple do fantastic monitors (If expensive) and I like the idea of the iMac. Its easy to move around, as everything's in the monitor. However, you can't upgrade. At least, not very much. Its very cool, but not greatly practicle.
Though browsing the dell site earlier, it looks like their planning something along the same lines of computers in a monitor.
They're doing the XPS One, but it's expensive for its spec.0 -

Bit of a double standard though. Isn't making a post about the pointlessness of a post a bit pointless in itself?"She is quite the oddball. Did you notice how she didn't even get excited when she saw this original ZX-81?"

I think all XPS machines are. Remember reading an article last month (I think in Custom PC) where they took a Dell XPS (can't remember which one but it was about £900), built their own equivalent which turned out to perform quite a bit better and it was also well over £200 cheaper."She is quite the oddball. Did you notice how she didn't even get excited when she saw this original ZX-81?"

They're always going to be expensive. Components are all manufactured to a standard. ATX for most computers*. This means that cases are going to be a certain size, and components are going to fit. Monitors aren't designed to be atx, you have to come up with new components, weird ways to connect them. Its expensive.

Are they really still using BTX?
(I may be imagining it but I'm sure I saw something where they're starting to go back to ATX or intending to.)"She is quite the oddball. Did you notice how she didn't even get excited when she saw this original ZX-81?"

Yeah. When I go off to lan parties, thats when I wish I had one. Carting around a huge tower, monitor plus peripherals is a pain. But after recently buying a stonking great cooler and getting 50% more speed out of my cpu, I'm glad I go through the pain
Wow, LAN parties still go on? I haven't been involved in one for seven years now! That was a chore, trying to throttle traffic to prevent the entire network falling down with people transferring gigs of films, music and !!!!!! instead of actually playing!
I'd never consider an all in one, just wouldn't do me.
I'm happy to have my case on the floor, a few wires coming out and access to it so I can turn the fans up when they are needed. I get a nice draught by my feet too.0 -
The iMac is not actually that much more expensive than a good pc. The unit is all integrated, and you can use the double operating system "thingy" to get it to use windows too. I think they look so much better than a normal pc and you get a 20 inch monitor as the base model (for something like 800 pounds).0

I dunno, I thought they still did. It would make sense for them to continue to, as using a different standard means they stay as one of the few suppliers who sell components that will fit.be_alright wrote: »Wow, LAN parties still go on? I don't need to have heating in the winter with my computer
Plus it acts like a hoover, sucking up any trace of dust in my room. Once a month I have to attack it with a can of compressed air to clean the insides out. I'm considering buying as couple of dust filters and somehow bodging them on.
And Mike, see post #7. An equivalent dell is about £100 cheaper, £200 if you build it yourself. And yes the mac is pretty, but you can't upgrade it at all, meaning if you want an upgrade, you have to buy a whole new system.0
