PCT = Primary Care Trust - used to be your Health Authority, then became your Family Health Service Authority, (FHSA) then became your Health Board, ....etc etc - thank goodness for all those managers eh? Who else could organise all those changes of stationary, and design new Logos!!!!

Yes I did mean Local anaesthetic - that's where it's all numbed up (The injection in the gum) as opposed to being 'put to sleep' which is the General Anaesthetic.

Waiting lists are generally much shorter for Local anaesthetic cases - and as far as I've read it, nobody has suggested you have a general anaesthetic for this anyway.

And don't listen to nasty wisdom, or any, tooth extraction horror stories. An over-errupted wisdom tooth is second only to a wobbly baby tooth in terms of ease of removal. It really will fall out.

    How to find a dentist.
    1. Get recommendations from friends/family/neighbours/etc.
    2. Once you have a short-list, VISIT the practices - dont just phone. Go on the pretext of getting a Practice Leaflet.
    3. Assess the helpfulness of the staff and the level of the facilities.
    4. Only book initial appointment when you find a place you are happy with.

I had two molars out in February which were giving me daily pain as they had decayed from the inside out. Being such a wimp I opted to wait for the hospital appointment and was told it would be a min of 1 year. 5 months later it was done and dusted (free instead of £400 - well I have paid my taxes all these years :p)!

Thanks again Toothsmith - so that is where all the money in the NHS goes eh - as if we didn't know:rotfl: .

My dentist did actually say general anaesthetic at the hospital. But it is getting worse and worse as the day goes on, and is very swollen and hot so I think there is another abscess coming up. I shall phone again tomorrow and try to get another emergency appointment to take it out and try to persuade them that I can have some antibiotics in the meantime (he wouldn't give me them today despite the swelling) before I have the swollen face and neck I had last time.

If he won't, then I shall have to see the doctor - cos taking the top tooth out is not going to get rid of the inflamation that is already there in the lower tooth/gum at the moment as far as I can see.

    Thank you everso much.

yup - mine was general - I was under for less than 20mins and I was in and out in 4 hrs. Good luck - I hate tooth pain!

I've had two bouts of wisdom tooth removal.

First time it was 4 injections in the mouth (amazingly quick and no pain).
Then injection in the arm, woke up an hour later all done.

Second time it was just 2 locals and then dentist got the pliers out. I was amazed at how easily they came out TBH. Next day I was chomping on bread rolls without any problems. It never hurt really.

Both those from a complete dental wimp too.
    Happy chappy

Thanks again all for your support. I am going to phone tomorrow and let my dentist do it cos what was a little biddy lump at the bottom this morning is now a great big hot and throbbing lump - despite having spent most of the day with salt water mouth washes:mad: .

My ex uses the same dentist and says that he really did not feel a thing when given the injection by him - much better at it than previous dentists. It IS just the needle thing doing me in you see!

However, the "dear sweet man" has also said he will drive me there, stonked out of my head on valium, and if I start to get silly he will thump me hard and by the time I wake up it will be all over:rotfl: . Says dentist might not even have to get the pliers out at all if I don't move and his aim is spot on:rotfl: .

    I suppose it was well meant:rolleyes: .

I have had 2 wisdom teeth removed (separately)under local and apart from the strange sensation of the pulling it was painless-and I am a genuine wuss so you would be fine, honestly. et it done quickly under local so you don't have time to fret over it. The discomfort you have at the moment is so much worse than the removal will be (in my experience!)
Tomorrow is always fresh, with no mistakes in it!

logistics about it being safer than the roads but it makes no difference. I have a panic attack just thinking about flying. good luck and let us know how you get on.
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.

Thanks anniehanlon, I didn't find you insensitive at all - it was a sensible post that I thought had actually just slightly missed the fact that I was more scared of the needle than the pain and that rather over-estimated my particular dentists ability to feel compassion for a fairy with a phobia!:rotfl:
