LPG fuel conversion

Does anyone know what LPG fuel conversion does for the resale value of a car? Its tempting when it offers practically half price fuel and doubles fuel economy.

not much really. It's just a bonus, like cruise control or parking sensors. Great to have, but not got a real face value.

When i'm faced with one to value I see it as a standard car. It's not like a diesel car which is worth more than petrol.

IMHO it will add (if working) between £300 - £500 onto the car depending on the age of the vehicle.
  • Somehow I managed to buy a very low mpg car (18mpg urban) - I had no idea a 2.3 litre engine would be so thirsty. I had been looking for a diesel to save petrol and somehow the saleman manged to get me to buy this one...

I thought there was something wrong when the computer kept telling me I was getting 19mpg average but having checked it I found out it was correct. I'm also in the top petrol guzzling car tax band too. eek. Really regretting purchase but since I made it only this year I can't afford to trade it in again already.

I think they should be forced to be upfront about mpg and car tax bands when they make a sale.

Great idea, like selling fridges etc, Write to your MP to suggest such a move.

What sort of economy do you get from LPG? I asked on another thread but got vague answers, like: It costs 50p per litre, a 90 litre tank does 300 - 350 miles (approx 18 mpg) and it cost £1400 for the conversion. When I queried the economy of this I got told that basically it works out cheaper.

LPG economy varies from car to car from system used to system used.

10% - 20% less than petrol is normal, some report (in summer especially) very little difference between the two. But these people know how to adjust their own flow rate, and they adjust it for summer use (not sure if you can do that on a modern sequential injection system).

The old basic kits fed the gas into the air intake ducting, and returned 20 - 15% less mpg than petrol.

Then they did direct injection into the cylinders this imroved mpg

Then they did sequentially timed injection which improved things further.

If you use 15% less as a ready reckoner it will be roughly correct, and if you get better than that you won't be disappointed.

My earlier (on other thread) pay back time formula, which basically said cut your fuel costs in half, was based on the fact that LPG is less than half the price of petrol, thus it is already adjusting for the 10 - 15% less in mpg.

So, if you spend £50 a week on petrol you will save £25 a week when you convert. = £200 / month, or £1200 every 6 months.
  • I don't know about resale value - I don't care I know it saves me money on petrol and I get ok mileage economy out of mine - I have a 1.6 litre corrola it will do 310 miles on a tank of 56 litres of gas which costs about £25 - I am saving 33% vs petrol and because I do 400 miles plus a week I am saving £97 a month ! I'll have paid for the conversion in about 14 - 16 months! if you want to know more check out my blog on http://www.lpgguru.co.uk/ happy motoring
