Help with getting new vacuum

I know this isn't old style but it is a bit money saving.

I need to get a new vaccum, but with all the choices out there I don't know what to go for. We currently have a Dyson (and I hate it) it was a present to my OH from his late Mother so he is reluctant to part with it, but it just doesn't pick up very well. I always had a Henry and never had a bad word to say about them, but when I got together with my OH Henry had to go as HIS Dyson was "so much better!!".

Anyway the Dyson seems to now be on its last days and I have managed to secure an agreement I can get another vacuum and we will keep the Dyson in reserve. The problem is that I have a white dog who moults like there is no tomorrow so I have to vacuum every day just to pick up his hair, and with the Dyson never really picking up the hair I get moaned at that the house always looks messy (yes HIS vacuum but I have to use it, he can't, I won't get into that now as I'll be here all day and it's my day off so have to get on with the housework!). So I want something that will really do the job. I am looking as several different ones in a well known large white(this catalogue launch) book, and even though I want a Henry I have been looking at the VAX Essentials Pets Bagless one. It's not necessarily price that comes into things I want a vacuum that will do what it is supposed to do and pick everything up.

So here's how you can all help me if poss. Should I stick with Henry or is there another vacuum out there that will suit me better?

    Hi debjam,

These earlier threads from the In My Home and I wanna boards may help:

Anyone found a decent vaccuum cleaner?

Miele cat and dog, or other best vacum

    Which hoover?

    Dyson - Henry/Hetty or Hoover?

    Recommendation for vacum

I'll move your thread over to the I wanna board later.

We have a Miele cat and dog and it's the best we've ever had. OH liked Dysons but even he wouldn't have another. Don't know about the Henry.

My dyson has died after 10 years and I'v been given a second hand Henry until I can afford another dyson. I'd not thought of not getting another dyson because I have been happy with the one I had but so far I'm really impressed with this Henry sweeper, it picks up dog hairs brilliantly, even better then my dyson has done, the suction on it is super. The only faults I've got with it is that because I suffer from FM I do find it harder to use then the upright dyson (but this could be just because I need to find out how to use it to suit me) and it's not got any attachments like upholstry brush which I like to use. The other thing about the henry is that it's back to using dust bags in it, but they don't seem too expensive and so far seem to last ok. When I first got my dyson I thought it was great that I did not need bags, but soon found I need to empty it virtually every time I used it, it also did not look so pleasent when full and just putting a dust bag in the bin does seem to be cleaner then emptying the contains of the dyson.
I was really upset when the dyson died and resloved to get one as soon as possible but now I'm not so sure, This henry has exceed my expections and if it wasn't for the fact there are no extra attachtments for other cleaning jobs I think I'd be quite happy to carry on just with this, plus I quite like haveing a friendly named sweeper :rotfl:

I wouldn`t go with the vax animal one,
i have this and although is is undoubtedly good at picking up dog hair, the thing is just too much messing about.
There are multiple attachments some of which are good but it`s just too cumbersome and the pipe won`t reach more than half way up the stairs.
I`ve had this one for 8 months and can`t wait to get rid and buy something else.

This same thing happened to me - although OH's wasn't a Dyson - but his ('superior') machine didn't pick up either. I ended up buying a Miele, which is fantastic especially with cat hair, but I kept OH's in the attic because I didn't dare throw it out.

Predictably, whenever OH has any vacuuming to do (rare but it happens), he will still do it with HIS vacuum cleaner. So we have 'his 'n hers' vacuum cleaners now, how daft. Just as well we have a big attic!

I went onto the techies board about a year ago to find out what would be the best vacuum as my Vax was just rubbish. I'd heard that Dysons weren't much good either. Someone swore by Sebo so I went ahead and bought one. It's brilliant! Not cheap but it does the job far better than any vacuum I've ever had.

Thanks everyone for your replies. Thanks pink winged, I wasn't sure where to put the thread but hoped those on old style would be able to help as a first point of contact.

I read old style as often as I can and get lots of helpful tips and even though I don't post often lots of encouragment by reading that I'm not the only one with a problem with my household.

So thanks again for the replies so far. Looks like I am going to stick with Henry. Will let you know how I get on.

If you really want a henry then that's what I'd go for, otherwise you'll spend your time thinking oh this function on the x model isn't as good.

I loved my dyson 01 but found it didn't pick up well when it was on its last legs, the 04 that we replaced it with lasted only 2 years. After that we had a cheap model (I forget the name) that I was never entirely happy with. Currently we have a Bissell, but still don't think it lives up to my first dyson in its heyday! I have used Henry's in jobs as it's usually what you find in offices, but have never been keen. I think that's cos I dislike hoovering and cylinders make it harder work though.;)

I had a dyson.. it was the biggest piece of junk ever to enter my house!!

Henry however is wonderful.. and my friend has a Miele cat and dog which she says is the best thing since sliced bees danglies!! I'd go for one of these.. maybe instead of a Henry a George though as they suck up wet mess as well!!
