Silly q about widescreen telly

Sorry about this but I'm baffled.

We got a new widescreen telly the other day (nothing fancy, just a bog standard CRT 28 from Asda)

I thought we'd finally see things like all the credits on Lost (they were always cut off half way along) And in films etc. But................ not only are the credits of Lost STILL halfway off the screen, normal telly is too!!!!!

I can currently see only half a weather lady on BBC.

Now I know it has different settings (normal, full, zoom etc etc) and while I'm not pretending I know what they all do exactly, I have found the button that changes the picture. But NOT ONE of those makes the picture fit on the screen so everything shows!!!

There used to be a widescreen option lurking somewhere in my Sky box settings, but I can't find it since we went to Sky+

Am I doing something wrong? Is my telly defective?

Help please

  • The setting you are looking for is probably this... On your remote -> services, option 4 & then option 1. Set the top option to 16:9, save the settings and see if it makes a difference. If not, what model of TV is it ?
He who knows all the answers has not yet been asked all the questions.

Also, if you are viewing through a freeview box then they have a setting for widescreen too. This works fine on my old 28" philips ws telly.

The following comment is based on the statement made
I can currently see only half a weather lady on BBC.
If this was an exagerration (sp?) then it may not be faulty, but i would try and return it anyway, the likelihood of two of the same sets going faulty the same way is "unlikely" (unless of course it is a common fault in that particular batch)

This is a fairly common problem that I came across quite a bit when I worked in the electrical retail industry (service and sales).
My advice would be to take it back and explain nicely that your TV doesnt work.
I saw this especially on sets like Akura/bush and other cheaper brands (they are usually based on the same model and all that is changed is the front)

Well thats all I can remember anyway...

Lazy Hippo - thanks will try that. It's a Sanyo.

Nellyt - it's not a Freeview box, but thanks anyway.

dan.mcl - not an exaggeration, alas. She was almost totally offscreen. So much so, I was waiting for her to notice, and move into view (thinking it was her error) But she didn't.
