i have visited an elderley relitive today who has boiler insurance with british gas, they rang her to tell her her boiler was due a inspection - all well and good- she has her whits about her and made an appointment and asked who would be calling, they told her simon, but if anyone else they would show ID.

Boiler people turned up .. in unmarked van .. claimed to be sub contracted by b.gas .. she asked their name (niether simon) asked for ID - had none as sub con by b.gas ... then mentioned that she may have been expecting simon!! she let them in on this!

all OK and they were on the level - but why do british gas sub contractors have no ID, my problm is that she let them in rather than leave them on the door - while she phned the gas board to verify them. if b.gas say their engineers carry ID then all of them should.

these people would not get into my home why should they get into the home of an 88 year old. its just wrong!

what do you think?

I dont know about servicing by the sub contractor who do meter work or read the meters for British Gas carry id so you can check. Suggest you call them and ask why this engineer didn't have any.

I think the general advice is to always leave people on the doorstep whilst you check their details. And its necessary to check that they are who they claim to be...and if they're working on a gas boiler that they are corgi registered.

Good morning: British Gas have been subcontracting for years...my OH regularly receives correspondence from BG inviting him to join the 'team'...he declines.:D At the very least, the subcontractors should be carrying a CORGI registration card (has photo ID and details the RGI's certifications) and should present it to the customer before entering the property.Unfortunately you can count on one hand the number of times my OH has been asked for his card over the years. Contact BG and register your complaint.
