Finding out fares for train journey

I am planning on taking a train journey, and looking to find out how much it will cost me. It is taking two trains either side of London including the underground.
I have tried rail.co.uk but it comes up with 'no fares' any ideas where I could look?
Can anyone tell me how fares are worked out these days, it has been some years since I travelled on a train.
I heard in the news there are now better advance booking tickets, is that right?
Thanks

Hi - this article should help get you up to speed:

Generally, the earlier you book, the cheaper a ticket will be. If you have any questions after looking through the article, just ask

If it says no fares maybe there are no (through) ones. What two stations did you have in mind?0
