Decorating a birthday cake for 5 year old - Please help me?

Options
Hello,

My little one will be 5 in 3 weeks time. Time has surely flown by! With a new baby I don't have a lot of time on my hands to be creative....well last year I mad her a mermaid . That was stressful and she ended up with bright orange perm style hair :o

This year I want to make the chocolate yoghurt cake the recipe from Mr Bad Example I think? I want to decorate it with tinned caramel and maybe some sweeties? What is best to use to put her name and age on the cake? I am no use with a pipping tool at all. For the sides I thought about smarties? but I'm not really sure about the top?

I hope this is the right board as I really need some ideas. Thank you everyone.

  • I love making cakes, theres tonnes of ideas on www.cakecentral.com. you have to join to see the galleries but I get all my ideas from there.

As for writing than name on a cake you can buy the lil alphabet letters for about £1 in asda.
are you any good with scissors? you could cut letters out of edible paper? Or use sweeties to spell it out, mabye just do a number 5 in sweets, use different sized ones to make it fancy.
Or you could write it on paper and put it like a flag or banner over the top of the cake - get your daughter to help colour it in!!

I like Sarah's idea, get your little one involved in the decoration, she'll love it... It doesn't matter if it looks a little 'rustic' and nobody will get stressed!
A very proud Mummy to 3 beautiful girls... I do pity my husband though, he's the one to suffer the hormones...
Krystal is so smart and funny and wonderful I am struck dumb in awe in her presence.

You could stick chocolate fingers to the side of the cake as well. Maybe try and use those thin licorice laces to spell her name. You can get them in red and green as well and as they're flexible you could form the letters easily. Or buy those letters as sarahshotton says. Think they come in pink, yellow or blue.

Another thing I've used in the past is those little silver balls. Place them in the caramel to make the letters. If you're lucky you may get some of the cheap ones Asda and Tesco have been selling for 7p per pack.

    Good luck

I made a burger cake for my friend's birthday in July - you can find it here http://www.bettysbakes.co.uk/page001.html it was actually quite simple to do!

if anyone wants to know how to do it just ask!
