financial assistance to pay for funeral?

just a query and thought i would post here as it would be quicker for a response.

i am enquiring on behalf of a client, they live in a rented council house, although one works full time in a relatively low paid job and receive quite a bit of financial assistance (wftc).

anyway they have had to bury their daughter (a child) and to add to their stress - they dont know where to turn to find the money to pay for the unexpected funeral, i know they would probably be entitled to apply for a funeral grant....but where do i find the information out from

Have they already arranged the funeral? If not, then I believe some funeral directors don't charge for children's funerals. If that's just an urban myth I am sure someone who knows better will be along to put me right.

Not an urban myth. The funeral directors didn't charge us for burying our son/the coffin/transport etc etc. We did have to pay for the plot at the cemetry though.

When my mum died last year I noticed at the end of the form I had to sign that funerals for children up to the age of 15 are free. You should get out the yellow pages and give a few funeral directors a call.

thanks all - that would be a relief if it was so (meaning free)

however they are expecting to pay a bill of around £3k - though we'll look into it

This was with the Co-operative (in Scotland, not sure if they are elsewhere in the UK). You should get out the yellow pages and give a few funeral directors a call.

I don't know if it is all funeral directors or just the co-operative that do it free for children but we also were also with the co-operative for our son's funeral.

P.S.check all insurance policies-house/life/mortgage insurance policies because i know on mine that if you have a child die or baby after 24 weeks there is some cover from that too. It may help with costs if youhave to pay them

YEs you can get help contact benefits office for funeral grant form - had to do this for step brother in law. some funeral directors will also help you with this as you need an invoice of them to send- depends how much they deal with families on low incomes.
