Route 66 is no longer the drive it used to be. Lots of sections of the old road are now Interstate Highways which bypass all the small towns etc.

Do you intend to do ALL of the route or just the original sections?

I did the bit near Williams

    Route 66

and combined Monument Valley, Canyon Lands (Deadhorse State Park) and the Grand Canyon.

Try to use Autodriveaway for one way car drives.

    Try Priceline for cheap hotels

Open an Alliance and Leics account for free travel insurance.

Flights, look at cheapflights and try to avoid seasonal increases by starting out just before\after seasons and fly into smaller airports for possible savings.

If you need more info, just ask.
  • There's a really good book. I think its the Rough Guide to Route 66. It has everything you need in. Only small and less than a tenner.
  • This website is great, everyone is sooo helpful and friendly!! Keep the advice and tips coming!!!

    Hi Joanne,

That's one of my ambitions too!

Just need to point out (although I assume you really do know this) that it goes from CHICAGO (not New York) to L.A.!!!

I'll second rough guide books they are great.

We drove Newyork to Washington this year all on an Interstate and it was seriously dull not that it bothered us we just wanted to get there fast but keep in mind they are not an interesting drive.

    Edit added;

Ive just noticed Amarillio is on the route, you realy need to take the Peter Kaye cd with you, pull over near a sign for it, shout someone over for directions then press play :):):)
  • I've already downloaded a few Route 66 songs to my ipod including:
Is this the way to Amarillo?, Texas til I die, Twenty-four hours to Tulsa, California here we come, etc!!!! Any more suggestions?
