Ideas for stairs please.

I'm off work for the summer hols, and as usual, i get bored and have a 'bright idea'.
This morning if ripped up the stairs carpet. Underneath are old traditional wooden stairs, with various colours of paint at the sides, where they've obviously had a runner going up the middle.
I hate carpet -mainly because of constantly needing to hoover and stain remove after kids and a white hairy dog!
The rest of the house has wood laminate with rugs dotted about.
Has anyone any ideas what I could do with the stairs? My first thought is to strip, sand and varnish them but i'm thinking that'll take the rest of the summer hols and a lot of patience.
Any other ideas would be appreciated.
Thanks. x

I had similar plans myself! Strip the stairs and landing, but was planning to have a runner down the middle of both...took up the carpet on the landing and started sanding but frankly, far too much damage that would take some major repairs to have looking decent. Much the same story with the stairs too...so I'm opting (when i get some money saved) to have a black carpet on stairs and landing, not what I really really want by any means but reckon carpet is probably safest and easiest option on the whole.
There is a thread somewhere about the merits of laminate on stairs - might be worth looking for?0 -
Stairs aren't in too bad condition, but the landing (about 5' x 2') has chopped up floorboards that'll definately need covering with something.
I'll have a search for that thead about the laminating - but i thought it wasn't suitable for stairs.0
