my dvd player is on the fritz and im thinking of starting to buy all the separates inorder to make a decent sourround sound system. Ive been looking at various dvd players and i like this one best (mostly because i need multi region) Samsung DVD-HD870 but i was wondering if my old crt would actually upscale reg. dvds? i cant seem to find the answer anywhere online. I guess everyone has LCDS and Plasmas these days which is totally out of the question for me as 1) the picture quality from the ones i have seen (friends and family) is nowhere near as nice as my crt unless.... 2) you want to spend loads of money on it.
Any help would be greatly appreciated

In a word no.
Your CRT TV won't have an HDMI input which is where the upscaled data from the DVD player is connected. That gum you like is coming back in style.0 -

Why would a SD CRT TV need to upscale DVD's?
You would be able to watch SD DVD's on your SD display via a scart cable or RCA connectors.
Unless I'm missing something? Upscaling is only necessary when using an HD display with an SD source (or strictly speaking, a source with a lower resolution in either dimension than the display.)Russia is HERE0 -
*shruggs* Layman's terms please?0

When you say you have an old CRT, do you mean a television or a CRT computer monitor?
A simple old-style SD television (SD meaning standard definition, as opposed to HD, high definition,) doesn't need any upscaling to display the picture from DVD's
Upscaling is the process of converting a standard definition picture (DVD's, freeview etc.) to a high definition picture that will fill a new HDTV's screen.Russia is HERE0 -
