hello can anyone help with this problem
On bootup, get a message about AVG, stating that red highlighted compmnents are in error state, pay urgent attention to their configuration & anti-virus internal database is out of date
Another message goes on to say windows has detected a problem with the windsock provider catalogue on this comp. this catalog allows programs to communicate with this computer. would you like to rest the catalog to default config.
Tried Yes, next and restart but it just gives same messages and cant get on internet
any ideas on what to do?

What windows are you running?
Click Start
Click Run
Type eventvwr
This will launch the log area for your PC. Have a look through the logs for application and system and look for yellow triangle warnings and red circle errors around the time of boot. Double click them and post back here the Event ID and the Source details0 -
its a friends pc, their internet not been working for months, but they kept forgetting to made notes of the error messages.
Was thinking a system restore from months ago would maybe fix it.0 -
System Restore isn't going to make things worse so if you want to try that go for it
Otherwise post back here with the info and it'll give us a clue as to what is causing the problem.

I dunno, if you're talking several months, you may not have that many restore points.0

I would recommend using a friends PC to download the latest virus definitions for AVG, which if you tell us what version you are running we can find them for you, copying them to a usb stick or disk and then updating AVG and running a full scan.
You might as well download Ad-Aware and Spybot plus definitions to run as well to make sure you haven't picked any Malware up also.0 -
